O'Brien's retirement comes as the NHS marks World Pharmacists Day on 25 September by celebrating the extraordinary contribution of pharmacists across the region.

Reflecting on her career, O'Brien said: ‘I never imagined as a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Salford that I would one day become a regional chief pharmacist. Pharmacy has given me opportunities I could never have dreamed of and introduced me to incredible people who have supported and inspired me throughout my career.

‘If there is one message I would leave for the next generation, it is this: never give up. I sat my Chemistry A-level four times before gaining a place at university and even had to re-sit elements of my degree. Setbacks do not define you. Determination, resilience and a willingness to learn will take you further than you think possible.

‘Pharmacy is a profession that changes lives every day. Whether you are working in a community pharmacy, a GP practice, a hospital or a leadership role, you have the opportunity to improve outcomes for patients and communities. Be proud of what you do, keep innovating and always put patients first.'
