Dr Tochukwu Akah was appointed as a clinical fellow in haematology at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust (HHFT) in September 2024. He was reported to the GMC on 1 May 2025 by his employer, following his dismissal from his post after the conclusion of an internal investigation.
Dr Akah made a number of false claims related to completed training courses, winning awards and his practical experience and expertise.
GMC representative Jade Bucklow said: ‘It is simply fortuitous that we do not have a case of patient harm within this allegation.'
The tribunal concluded ‘this was a wholesale fabrication of awards, publications, presentations, and experience, designed to meet the criteria for job selection on a fictitious basis. It considered the fact that this was not only reckless conduct but was a breach of one of the fundamental tenets of the medical profession'.
A spokesperson from HHFT said: ‘Patient safety is always our priority and as soon as concerns were raised, measures were put in place to keep patients safe whilst matters were investigated in line with policy. Following a formal HR process, Dr Akah was dismissed from Hampshire Hospitals.'
