The Bill prevents anyone born after 1 January 2009 from legally smoking by gradually raising the age at which tobacco can be bought, restricts sweet vape flavours and will review the packaging of e-cigarettes to reduce their appeal to children and young people, and includes a total ban on vape advertising and sponsorship.

The vote, which took place yesterday evening (26 November), saw the bill passing by 415 votes to 47.

Health secretary Wes Streeting said the legislation will ‘come down on the vaping industry like a tonne of bricks'.

A UK smoking ban was first proposed by former prime minister Rishi Sunak in October 2023.
