MPs' committee to investigate state of palliative care in England

The Health and Social Care Committee has asked its Expert Panel to undertake an evaluation of the state of palliative care in England.

Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee, Layla Moran, and chair of the committee's Expert Panel, Professor Dame Jane Dacre, have written to health and social care secretary, Wes Streeting to confirm the move.

The letter asks the Government to by 31 January 2025 set out its current expectations for the level and standard of palliative care that should be provided in England, including on the quality of the care, in order to support the panel's evaluation.

In December the Government announced a £100m boost for adult's hospices with a further £26m for children and young people's hospices in 2025/26.

The funding was welcomed by Toby Porter, chief executive of Hospice UK, who said it will ‘allow hospices to continue to reach hundreds of thousands of people every year with high-quality, compassionate care'.
