Speaking to Parliament yesterday, Smith said the vast majority of members were receiving the correct pension amount but ‘some will have been entitled to more'.

The admin errors have come during implementation of the McCloud Remedy which removes age discrimination that was judged to have arisen in public service pension schemes, including the NHS.

The NHS Pension Scheme is administered on behalf of the Department by the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA).

Smyth said around 95% of members were unaffected. Those who have been affected will be contacted by the NHSBSA. No action is needed by anyone who is a member of the NHS pension, whether working or retired.

The minister has appointed the Government Actuary's Department to lead a comprehensive audit of the scheme's administration.
