The move followed the departure of group chief executive James Sumner and came after NHSE blocked plans to expand or merge the group.

In a message to staff, Flory said: ‘It has been an honour and privilege to have served you as chair for three-and-a-half-years, initially for Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, then for Liverpool Women's University Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and finally, as Chair of the UHL Group.

‘When I was appointed to the role, there was an ask for greater collaboration and integration within adult acute and specialist hospitals in Liverpool. The shared leadership and formation of the group, highlights the progress that has been made over the last few years.'

NHS England (North West) is now supporting the Group to appoint an interim chair.
