The funding is part of the £1.5bn in estates funding announced by the Government this month and followed a £20m investment last year.

Raghuv Bhasin, chief executive of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said: ‘We are delighted to receive this additional £25m investment from the Department of Health and Social Care. This funding is a strong vote of confidence in our plans to transform healthcare facilities at Wycombe Hospital and create a modern environment for patients, families and colleagues.

‘The redevelopment represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve healthcare facilities for Buckinghamshire residents. This additional funding enables us to continue making progress while developing plans for the next stages of the programme. Construction work is moving forward well and it is exciting to see our vision beginning to take shape on site.'

The trust has warned the hospital's eight-storey tower, which was built in the 1960s, will not be fit for clinical use within five years and pledged its phased replacement after it was excluded from the New Hospital Programme.

The first phase of the development will provide a new endoscopy unit, with planning and design work continuing on future phases of the building. The trust is continuing to work with NHS England and national partners on the wider funding programme needed to deliver the full vision for the site.
