The new Laboratory Managed Service Contract, valued at more than £500m across a potential 20-year term, will support the diagnosis and treatment of more than 1.4 million people in the NHSGGC area and many more across Scotland.

The contract is one of the largest of its kind in the UK and covers the full range of laboratory disciplines, including biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, and pathology. It will be implemented across all NHSGGC's main acute sites and will also support regional and national services.

Professor Jann Gardner, chief executive of NHSGGC, said: ‘This contract is a vital investment in the future of healthcare for our patients. It ensures we can continue to deliver fast, accurate, and reliable laboratory services that support clinical decision-making every day.

‘I am confident that this partnership with Abbott will deliver real value for our patients and our staff.'

Konstantinos Varlas, DVP Europe commercial operations at Abbott's core diagnostics business, said: ‘This agreement to support NHSGGC in the delivery of world-class laboratory services adds to the great working partnership that has existed between our two organisations over the past two decades.

‘Abbott's wide range of diagnostic tests and digital health solutions turn accurate, timely results into smart decisions and exceptional outcomes for patients. Our shared values through this contract, which focus on innovation, sustainability, and service excellence, will help ensure patients receive the highest standard of care, not only across Greater Glasgow and Clyde but also the wider Scottish population too.'

The contract will now move into the implementation phase, with detailed planning underway to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to services.
