How well or poorly trusts are performing on clinical trials will be made public with the Government providing investment for the high performers under plans to speed up clinical research.

Health and social care secretary Wes Streeting said: ‘By slashing through red tape and making it easier for patients to take part, reforms in our 10-Year Plan will grow our life sciences sector, generate news funds for the NHS to reinvest in frontline care and benefit patients through better medicines.'

Under the plans, millions will be given the opportunity to take part in clinical trials via the NIHR Be Part of Research service on the NHS App.

It takes the NHS around 250 days to set up a clinical trial compared with around 100 days in Spain.

The Government aims to cut set up times to 150 days or less by March 2026.

The plan will introduce a national standardised contract which can save months of wasted time, as well as simplifying paperwork to remove duplication on technical assurances.

The 10-Year Health Plan is expected to be published in early July.
