An independent investigation found the failings were all linked to one consultant surgeon who remains employed by the trust but is not currently operating.

‘We fully acknowledge that there were failings in some areas of the department and we offer our unreserved apologies for this,' a trust spokesperson said.

Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals said the consultant was at the first stage of a structured return to work at a different hospital trust.

‘We are currently considering the next stage of this phased return, in line with appropriate standards, review recommendations and external advice,' the trust said.

‘A referral was made to the GMC who are investigating through their usual processes and the consultant remains licensed to practise with no restrictions.'

The GMC said it was not able to provide information about individual concerns unless a doctor had interim restrictions on their practice.

A GMC spokesperson said: ‘Patient safety is at the core of everything we do and we will always take action where there is a risk to the public.'
