The accident on 19 June sadly resulted in the death of a train driver with 33 people taken to hospital, a number of who remain in a critical condition.

In a statement to Parliament yesterday, Alexander said ‘all responders, to a person, acted quickly, professionally and bravely in the most challenging of circumstances'.

She also thanked NHS staff who are still providing care for those injured.

Bedford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who has tragically died following the train collision in Bedford on Friday. Our thoughts remain with those who were injured, and everyone who has been affected by this incident.

‘Thank you to our staff, emergency service colleagues and local partners who responded with incredible professionalism and courage in extremely difficult circumstances.'
