The fire took place in a linen room on the ground floor of the of the Clarence/Cambridge building on Thursday 1 May.

London Fire Brigade said around 70 members of staff and patients had been evacuated after eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to the scene.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by self-heating textiles.

In an update statement today, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said patients from two of the three wards affected by smoke remained in other parts of the hospital with their nursing teams.

The trust said no one had been hurt and most services - including A&E - continued to run as normal.

St Mary's hospital director Karen Powell said: ‘I'd like to thank all our staff involved in responding to this incident – they did a fantastic job caring for patients in very challenging circumstances. We are also very grateful to London Fire Brigade and to our patients and visitors for their understanding.'
