NBT is one of the UK's leading centres for robotic-assisted surgery, with programmes spanning urology, colorectal, gynaecology and upper GI surgery. Over the past decade, robotic-assisted surgery at Southmead Hospital has contributed to shorter recovery times, reduced blood loss, fewer complications and shorter hospital stays, supporting both improved patient outcomes and increased surgical capacity.
As part of the celebration, Intuitive – the global leader behind the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical systems used at NBT – will bring da Vinci 5, its latest, most advanced system, to the Brunel atrium. NBT colleagues, patients and visitors will be able to test the demo system and experience the technology that has transformed surgical care across Bristol and the wider region.
Professor Tim Whittlestone, chief medical and innovation officer at Bristol NHS Group, which runs North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘Reaching our 10,000th robotic procedure is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the dedication of our surgical teams.
‘Robotic-assisted surgery with da Vinci surgical systems enables quicker procedures and allows us to carry out more procedures than ever before. It is transforming both the patient experience and the way we deliver surgical care.'
