NHS funding must be spent wisely, warns committee chair

Chair of the Health Select Committee, Layla Moran, has warned the Government’s £22.6bn uplift on NHS spending must be spent wisely.

Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, the Lib Dem Oxford West and Abingdon MP warned of the ‘disappointment of constituents' if the funding ‘does not lead to the change that they so desperately want and need'.

Moran said: ‘The Liberal Democrats have warned for years that the failure to invest in the NHS has been a disaster. Ultimately, short-term thinking is costing us more. But more importantly it is affecting real people's lives.'

The MP's comments follow the announcement by NHS England that a meeting with leaders next week on the 2025/26 planning round will focus on a ‘fundamental reset' for the NHS financial regime.

Moran said a ‘lack of detail' made it ‘impossible' to scrutinise NHS spending in a ‘meaningful way'.

She added: ‘This prevents Parliament from checking whether efficiency gains are being made in the areas they were promised. We are also unable to identify spending areas where there may be shortfalls.

‘What we have then, is a funding rise that sounds big, but really only makes up for the pay squeeze of the last 15 years.

‘If we really want to see every patient get the care they need, when they need it, we need to invest in the estate, invest in technology and invest in our people.'
