The move came after President Donald Trump and US secretary of health, Robert F Kennedy Jr, linked paracetamol with autism.

Liberal Democrat health and social care spokesperson, Helen Morgan, said: ‘We cannot allow Trump's anti-science agenda to take root in the UK. The Government must tackle this fake news head on and launch a public information campaign to give safe advice to pregnant mothers about paracetamol use.'

Morgan also called for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to support the campaign after accusing him of ‘shamefully copying Trump's playbook of spreading dangerous fake news'.

When asked on LBC whether President Trump was right to link paracetamol with autism, Farage said: ‘I've no idea. We were told thalidomide was a very safe drug and its wasn't. Who knows. When it comes to science I don't side with anybody.'

A Reform UK spokesman said: ‘Nigel Farage was very clear when he said that he would not follow what Mr Kennedy's department does. The Liberal Democrats are purposefully misrepresenting what he said in a desperate attempt to stay relevant.'
