'Emergency package' call following record A&E summer

The Liberal Democrats have called for an ‘emergency package’ for the NHS this winter after revealing record summer A&E demand.

Analysis by the party showed the NHS was on track for its busiest ever summer with 2.9m attendances to A&E in June and July.

Liberal Democrat health and social care spokesperson, Helen Morgan, said: ‘The NHS is now entering a state of permacrisis. What was once a winter crisis has become a year-round disaster, with the health service buckling under pressure all year round.

‘Every day people are put at risk by long, deadly waits with families watching helplessly as loved ones are left in agony on trolleys in A&E corridors.'

The emergency package recommended by the Lib Dems would include increasing vaccine uptake for illnesses such as flu, expand access to pharmacies and a recruitment drive to increase the number of out of hours GPs.

It comes as their analysis showed there were over 1,200 12-hour waits per day in the summer with some areas seeing nearly half of patients waiting 12 hours or more to be admitted.

A&Es are on course to record their busiest summer months on record, with the number of attendances increasing by 15% since 2015.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: ‘We inherited an emergency care system on its knees, but under this Government A&E waits continue to improve despite an overall increase in demand, ensuring patients are being seen sooner.

‘We have invested nearly £450m to expand urgent and emergency care facilities - delivering more same day emergency care services, more mental health crisis centres and around 500 new ambulances - so patients get better, faster emergency care.

‘Through our Plan for Change we will cut waiting times further as we shift more care into the community, and we encourage everyone eligible to come forward to get their seasonal flu and covid jabs to reduce pressure on the health service this winter.'

The Government set out its plan to support urgent and emergency care ahead of this winter in June.
