Key priorities in the Refreshed Plan include:

Reducing the carbon footprint of buildings, medicines, travel, and supply chains across NHS services

Supporting staff to become sustainability champions, embedding green thinking into everyday roles

Expanding virtual care and digital tools to cut unnecessary travel and waste

Promoting greener clinical practices such as low-carbon inhalers and anaesthetic gases

Partnering with councils and local communities to deliver shared climate goals.

In addition, the refreshed plan highlights progress across the wider region, with practices and networks embedding sustainability into everyday care. For example, North Arden Primary Care Network (PCN) has introduced a range of practical green initiatives, which include switching to recyclable supplies, installing energy-efficient lighting and boilers, promoting waste reduction and embedding sustainability into governance structures. Together, these actions not only support the environment but also deliver cost savings and improve practice operations.

Laura Nelson, chief integration officer at Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, said: ‘Our refreshed Green Plan reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and the unique role the NHS has in tackling it.

‘We're proud to be taking local action that not only reduces our environmental impact but also directly improves people's health and wellbeing. This is about creating a future where sustainable care is simply better care.'
