McCannon has spent more than 40 years of her professional career within the NHS as a registered nurse, holding the position of senior nurse, and latterly as an academic teaching fellow for undergraduate and postgraduate nurse education at the Western Isles Campus for the University of Stirling.

Her reappointment runs from until 4 July 2029.
