The trusts announced plans to merge in July 2025 after forming a single group in April 2025 consisting of 28,000 staff with a combined turnover of over £2.2bn.

Bristol NHS Group published a Group Clinical Strategy Update 2026 earlier this month.

The group said early work through the Group Clinical Strategy had already shown the benefits of working in partnership, including reduced waiting times for cardiology services.

A group statement added:The merger also strengthens our ability to invest in the future, including modern digital systems, research and innovation, and the shift towards more preventative, community‑based care. It supports the ambitions of the NHS 10‑Year Plan, with a strong focus on prevention, early intervention and tackling health inequalities.'

The proposal to merge is going through a formal national assurance process and is subject to approvals from both trust boards, council of governors, NHS England and the secretary of state.
