The latest UKHSA data shows the outbreak in North London has now confirmed 71 cases in Enfield, with a further 13 in the neighbouring borough, Haringey.

Nalini Iyanger, consultant in health protection at the UKHSA said: ‘We welcomed the opportunity to talk to the Assembly about measles and the work underway that we and partners are doing to control the spread.

‘It's important that we keep the issue of measles on the radar and continue raising awareness of the importance of vaccination to protect children and vulnerable contacts.'

The leaders told the London Assembly Health Committee how they were working together to identify cases quickly, limit further spread and increase uptake of the MMR vaccine.

Measures taken include: increasing access to catch-up vaccinations through GP practices and local clinics; providing clear information to parents about the safety and effectiveness of the MMR vaccine; working with schools, community groups and faith leaders to answer questions and address concerns; and ensuring people know the symptoms of measles and what to do if they think they or their child may have it.

Dudu Sher Arami, director of public health, Enfield Council, said: ‘Local councils are working closely with NHS and public health colleagues to reach communities with clear, trusted information about measles and MMR vaccinations. We want parents and carers to feel confident asking questions, and to know where they can access vaccinations locally.

‘We are extremely grateful to our community organisations and to colleagues across Enfield's schools for their continued efforts towards supporting our response.'
