The 27 are the first of 50 neighbourhood health centres backed by a total of £200m in Government investment to upgrade existing buildings.

Health minister Stephen Kinnock said: ‘We're rolling out neighbourhood health centres across the country by repurposing and improving local buildings, first targeting the communities that need them most. These one-stop shops will help end the maze of referrals and repeated conversations, treating not just poor health but the causes of it, too.

‘As we rebuild our NHS, our mission is to shift more healthcare into the community, while delivering easier access to care, improved outcomes for patients and better value for money for the taxpayer.'

The centres will offer a range of health services, including urgent treatment, GP and pharmacy services, as well as wider services like debt advice, employment and family support, and other voluntary sector support.

The Government has pledged to open 250 centres by 2036, with the first 120 open by 2030.

Head of policy and practice at the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, Joe Brunwin, said: ‘Neighbourhood health is the right direction. However, for these centres to work, they must be properly funded and built around strong multidisciplinary teams. Occupational therapists must be a key part of this. Some early examples of the roles involved don't yet highlight occupational therapists clearly, and it's essential that their contribution is fully recognised as plans develop.'

Professor Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, said: 'Our concerns around delivery, accountability, and the practical involvement of social care providers within the new Neighbourhood Health Framework remain. Care providers must be fully involved in the design, commissioning and ongoing delivery of these services from the very beginning. The significant operational and financial pressures facing providers must also be acknowledged and addressed if they are to play their full part in this new system.

'Without clear roles, shared accountability and a genuine focus on people and outcomes, there is a real risk that neighbourhood health centres become another organisational restructure rather than a transformative shift in the way care is delivered.'
