Birmingham and Solihull GP Partnership Board selects new chair

Birmingham and Solihull GP Partnership Board has appointed Dr Subeena Suleman as its new chair.

Dr Suleman has been working as a GP since 2010, mainly in East Birmingham. She became a lead executive partner at Iridium Medical Practice in Bordesley Green in 2016.

In the past two years, Dr Suleman has led the East Locality, bringing six primary care networks together caring for over 250,000 patients. Her work cemented the formation of East Connect as a Community Integrated Care legal entity. 

Dr Suleman also led the creation of East Birmingham Locality Hub, integrating chronic disease pathways across the locality and leading work in Integrated Neighbourhood Teams. She is also leading the Right Access Transformative programme across primary care and is the chair of the GP Provider Support Unit Steering Group.

She said: ‘It's a privilege to be appointed chair of the Partnership Board. Our strength lies in collaboration — by working together, sharing learning, and supporting one another, we can continue to improve access, quality, and continuity of care for our patients. I'm excited to help shape the next chapter for our partnership.'

David Melbourne, chief executive of NHS Birmingham and Solihull and NHS Black Country, said: ‘Subeena is already recognised as an outstanding leader with the vision and capability to deliver transformation while keeping patients and our communities at the heart of everything we do. I am confident she will lead our GP Partnership Board with distinction, and I look forward to continuing our work together over the coming months.

‘I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to outgoing GP Partnership Board chair Dr Sunando Ghosh for his leadership and support. He has been a core member of the Birmingham and Solihull leadership team and a passionate advocate for the GP sector.'

Suzanne Cleary, deputy chief executive and chief officer for strategy & partnerships at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘Subeena's leadership to date of the development of our locality partnership in East Birmingham, and the wider Collaborative, has been outstanding. I know she will go from strength-to-strength as she leads our GP Partnership Board.'
