The team achieved the top score in the 2026 General Medical Council national training survey, placing first out of 189 acute medical units across the country.

Dr Tom Payne, a consultant in acute medicine at Musgrove Park Hospital, which is run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said the recognition reflects the strong team culture across the unit.

‘We're really proud of the result,' he said. ‘We've had consistently high scores over the years and there's definitely something nice about being number one and getting that top spot.

‘It shows that we can be consistent, and that it's not just a one-off. It's something we've been able to maintain, which means it's embedded in the way we work and is there all the time.'

The annual survey asks doctors in training about their experience, including the quality of supervision, support, teaching and the culture of the teams they work in.

The result is a major achievement for colleagues on Musgrove's acute medical unit, which has consistently scored highly in previous years, often placing in the top five or top 10 nationally.
